Grizzly Intelligent Edge Device Overview
Enterprise customers with remote geographically separated sites
are utilizing satellite networks to access the Internet and provide
access to the corporate backbone. Inherent to the spread of these
networks is the search for small access devices that allow the connection
to the Internet in a very user friendly way but with a growing number
of offered services, comprising basic IP functionalities (e.g.,
DNS, DHCP,NAT), performance enhancements (e.g., PEP and Compression)
and security and traffic control services.
Traditionally a subset of these services are available
as part of an edge router or can be achieved through the combination
of a number of devices (e.g., VPN server, QoS manager, router).
However, these products are not optimized for operation over a satellite
link and
often conflict with each other. For example a VPN access device
encrypts traffic so
performance enhancement features like compression can’t be
utilized.

Grizzly, the Intelligent Edge Device (IED) from PolarSat offers
a combination advanced IP services at low cost that can be easily
managed from a remote location. The Grizzly IED enable service providers
to offer subscribers not just Internet access, but enable them to
use satellite broadband connections for offering IP VPNs, voice,
multimedia and high-value services tailored to each subscriber of
class of subscribers.
Services that carriers can offer using the Grizzly
IED in conjunction with SkyIP
and FlexiDAMA satellite
broadband access system include:
- Integrated Voice and Data
- Bandwidth on Demand
- E-Learning service
- Telemedicine services
- Secure Intranet access
- Premium ASP services
- Tiered Internet Access
The Grizzly provides capabilities that are combined
to support the above mentioned services. The key Grizzly IED features
are listed below:
- Quality
of Service (QoS)
support of multiple application
class setting and traffic shaping
- Performance Enhancement Proxy (PeP)
that ensures wireline performance of TCP applications over satellite
- DNS server provides local
domain name lookup
- DHCP server allows for private
IP address and leasing of IP address to remote hosts
- Firewall to protect the
subscribers remote LAN from unauthorized access
- IPSec encryption of traffic
over the satellite link to secure user traffic
- IPComp improves throughput
performance over the satellite link.
