Mongolia Telecommunications Company (MTC)

During the past decade in the Asia-Pacific area, developing countries like Mongolia, have adopted wide-based reforms to improve economic efficiency and accelerated growth in telecommunication services. These reforms have included the liberalization of the telecommunication and information technologies and creation of an environment to increase private sector contributions for development and growth services. To that end, the VSATPlus II network for the Mongolia Telecommunications Company (MTC), the national long-distance carrier of Mongolia, was deployed, then expanded to include equipment at the central gateway station located in Ulaanbaatar and 18 remote stations across the country. This network represents a significant portion of Mongolia's public telecom infrastructure and interconnects digital switches at 18 locations carrying voice, data and fax communications. The entire network has the newest voice compression technology from PolarSat.

Mongolia is home to 2.4 million people living in 1.565 million square kilometers of territory divided administratively into 21 regional centers called aimags. Given the distance between small towns and villages, most of which are located hundreds of kilometers from each other, the question of delivering modern communications services posed a considerable challenge. The existing telephone stations in the provincial centers are all 20-30 years old, and, any rural cable lines that still exist only provide very low-speed connectivity. Because replacement of this terrestrial-based infrastructure would be very costly and limited in scope, wireless communications was deemed the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
