Emerging
Carriers
Mediterranean Network (MedNet)
MedNet is a highly entrepreneurial alternate
carrier with numerous telecommunications ventures around the
world. Using VSATPlus
II technology, in this example, MedNet has built a
cellular network in the former Zaire, with the network's backbone
infrastructure deployed back into Europe via satellite. MedNet
was required to provide telephony service to cellular users
within and between approximately 13 cities in Zaire. In addition,
the network needed to support international dialing capability.
To provide reliable, cost-effective international access,
gateways would be set up in European countries to allow end-users
in Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) to access
the world through these sites.
VSATPlus II was selected as
the backbone network of the cellular system. This way, a complete
wireless solution could be implemented quickly. All sites
in the country, except for the capital city of Kinshasa, were
provisioned with VSATPlus II terminals. Kinshasa was
equipped with a VSATPlus IIe terminal to provide a
redundant modem/controller and power supply. International
gateways were installed in Monaco, the UK, and Cyprus. The
StreamView NMS
was installed at the site in Monaco.
